Morocco 2002 Scrap Book
I collection of junk from my diary but there may be something useful here.  A few tips and accomodation suggestions ...
Lose your GB sticker on the way in to confuse locals and have much more fun pretending to be Swedish ...
Get a ferry ticket from any of the host of shops surrounding (they start in the Costa del Sol!) Algeciras or the ferry terminal itself (more chilled) ... they are all the same price.  Once you have bought a ticket you can use it on any of the different companies boats to and from Ceuta.
Drive through Moulay Idriss (the holy city) ... you can't stay there after dark unless you are a Muslim ... but just down the road is camping (see GPS Waypoints) and the Roman ruins at Volubilis.  Well worth the 10DH entrance!
Some trucker will stick something like this on your tank during the ferry ride ... those Spanish just love the bikes ... even a ratty XT.
KASBAH LE TOUAREG, MERZOUGA.
Stayed here ... good clean rooms (some new) on the roof of the "Kasbah" for 80DH (twin room) with shared HOT showers down by the lobby ... friendly owner with dental problems.  Within easy falling over distance of the dunes.  See
GPS Waypoints.
CHEZ TIHRI, MERZOUGA.
Ahh, the romance of the desert ... as we were frequently told.  If you like being constantly surrounded by doped up staff showing you "traditional Berber hospitality" then this is the place for you ... but still a nice twin room for 90DH.  New rooms being built and the Tajine was good.  See
GPS Waypoints.
On the boat, pick up one of these little forms ... hand it in with your passport to window number one in order to get a stamp and an entry number (the entry number may not be stamped on the same page in your passport!).  Get a temporary vehicle importation form and fill it out ... including your entry number.  Go to another window with your V5 and proof of insurance (make sure the word Morocco is mentioned on your insurance document ... they rejected mine!) ... smile at the policeman and he will return all your forms with a temporary document that you have to hand in when you leave the country ... now you are free to go and play in Maroc!
BAHA BAHA, NEKOB.
If you are in Nekob stay here (actually it's the only hotel in Nekob so you ain't got much choice) ... they have a pet dog, comedy goats and a shy peacock!  It's closed off from the street so hassle free.  Great new rooms and bathrooms ... Berber tents to rent, a pool and a terrace with fantastic views.  We haggled them down to 250DH for two rooms (two twins) so it's not cheap but worth the extra.  See
GPS Waypoints.
HOTEL ESSAOUIRA, MARRAKECH.
Great place.  You WILL need a
GPS Waypoint to find it without a guide (or maybe that's just me).  You can stick your bike in the reception area next to the fountain!  Easy walk to the main square with all the food stalls and the nearby souks.  80DH for a new twin room with a shared HOT shower ... nice.  Terrace is handy for escaping the madness of Marrakech now and then.  But, I reckon Marrakech was the nicest big city in Maroc anyway.
Kids give you these rather nice palm leaf things whenever you make them happy  I.e. supply sweets or stylos or a few DH.  We even found that fruit was appreciated suggesting that the kids are REALLY hungry.  I am going to give fruit to "homeless" people in London from now on and see what the reaction is.
